Effect of Rear Axle Ratio on Vehicle Performance

ABSTRACT:  In the present work, performance of a vehicle is studied when rear-axle ratio is increased from 4.1 to 4.3. The performance parameters considered are top-speed, maximum torque, maximum traction force, maximum acceleration at each gear, maximum gradeability at first gear and percentage increase in fuel consumption at each gear. The above mentioned performance parameters are calculated for rear-axle ratio 4.1 and 4.3 and the results are compared. When differential ratio is increased from 4.1 to 4.3, the performance parameters are increased and only the top speed at each gear is decreased. Hence the vehicle with differential ratio 4.3 can be used for heavy loading conditions at the expenses of minute decrease in speed and fuel economy.
